Dealing with the medical profession can be daunting, finding out what tests you may need, when to see your doctor, what to ask for. With years of experience in this field of medicine you will be guided to what help you need and how to get it.

Research is showing that Acupuncture improves IVF outcomes because it may help to regulate important hormones associated with success.

Acupuncture improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries and supports the development of an adequate uterine lining.

Acupuncture around the time of embryo transfer (ET) can help reduce the stress and anxiety, but starting treatment prior to ET will likely have a greater effect on improving your outcome.

A cohort study in 2014 showed that acupuncture treatments leading up to IVF may benefit fresh cycles by 77%. Hullender Rubin et al, 2014.

The well documented trial by Paulus et al, 2002 had a control group receiving no acupuncture and a group receiving acupuncture before and after embryo transfer. Success rates were 42.5% acupuncture group to 26.3% non acupuncture group. (p=0.03). The acupuncture was performed very soon before and after the transfer. A similar trial Craig et al,2006/2009 showed that acupuncture given later or the following day did not have the same positive outcome.

Recently The British Medical Journal published a meta analysis, which pools the results of all the trials to give an overall result. This analysis from Manheimer et al, 2013 concluded that acupuncture on or around Embryo Transfer may improve birth outcomes.

In many eastern cultures acupuncture has been used for many centuries as a preventative medicine and treatment to support male and female reproductive health. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used to help with specific gynaecological concerns such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease and difficult periods.

Stress and hormonal imbalances are thought to be a big factor in fertility issues, especially unexplained infertility. Acupuncture is routinely used to address this as research suggests that acupuncture may relieve stress and help the body to relax as well as balancing hormones.

Acupuncture can significantly reduce the risk of miscarriage and support the whole pregnancy whether through IVF or other methods.

Acupuncture Can:

  • Improve the function of the ovaries to produce better quality eggs.
  • Regulate the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles.
  • Relax the patient and decrease stress levels.
  • Prevent the uterus from contracting.
  • Lessen the side effects from drugs used in IVF.
  • Strengthen the immune system.
  • Improve semen to create better quality and quantity of embryos.
  • Decrease chances of miscarriage.
  • Acupuncture therefore increases the chances of a natural pregnancy.
  • Regulate and treat all menstrual disorders.

Male Infertility

A male fertility problem is considered important in 40% of all couples, the same figure for women. A recent study has shown that acupuncture can improve fertility in men. The study published in Fertility and Sterility showed that acupuncture both increased the number of sperm and forward movement and also decreased the number of defects in the shape.

Acupuncture helps with circulation and with varicocele which block the production of healthy sperm, a common factor with male infertility.
